University of Arizona School of Theatre Film & Television Arizona Repertory Theatre Announces 2019/2020 Season

TUCSON, AZ – Arizona Repertory Theatre (ART) announces an outstanding line up of productions for the 2019/2020 season. The season assures the School’s long tradition of outstanding training for University of Arizona theatre students and advances its commitment to offering exceptional programming to the public.

Arizona Repertory Theatre is thrilled to present a season filled with joy, intellect, drama, heart, and most of all, a genuine reflection of humanity. It is a reflection that can be both beautiful and sad, but is always powerful and moving.

The Legend of Georgia McBride kicks off the theatrical journey with the funny and heartwarming story of an Elvis impersonator turned drag queen. After that, Stephen Schwartz’s modern musical classic, Pippin tells of a young prince and his quest for true happiness and fulfillment. The year comes to a close with The Last Night of Ballyhoo, a Tony Award winning play which finds the Freitag family confronting their own prejudices, desires and beliefs as they prepare for the social event of the year.

A finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for drama, The Wolves is a ferocious, smart and fun look into the world of young female competitors, their relationships to one another and the world around them. Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona tells the comedic tale of two long lost friends in love with the same woman. The season ends on a beautiful note with another Tony Award winner, The Light in the Piazza. Set in Italy, this romantic location is the perfect backdrop for exquisite songs and a delightful love story.

“Audiences and students will find the season is exciting in its clear intent toward diversifying representation on our stages,” said Deanna Fitzgerald, Interim Co-Director of the School of Theatre, Film & Television and Producer of Arizona Repertory Theatre. “Some of the productions may be familiar and some may be new, but we expect all of them to be entertaining and provide audiences with a theatrical experience they will not forget.”

Fitzgerald also noted, “The training of our students in the classics like Pippin and The Two Gentlemen of Verona continues to be a high priority, while newer works like The Legend of Georgia McBride and The Wolves provide them with the opportunity to challenge themselves with more contemporary and ambitious scripts. As an educational institution with a professional faculty and rigorous standards, we believe that all of these productions will positively shape the lives of our students, as they learn to create impact for our audiences, and prepare them to transition successfully into the theatre and entertainment fields.”

Tucson, AZ – January 23, 2019

Tucson, AZ – Arizona Repertory Theatre presents Top Girls, by Obie Award winning playwright Caryl Churchill, February 3 – 24, 2019 in the Tornabene Theatre located at 1025 N. Olive Road (UA campus located near the SE corner of Park Avenue and Speedway Boulevard).

Top Girls, directed by UA Assistant Professor David Morden, explores what it means to be a successful woman in the 20th century.  The play is set in 1982 and follows the character Marlene, who is driven by her desire to achieve professional success at a time when glass ceilings were starting to crack and women were finding their voice in the corporate and political world.

“Ms. Churchill paints a picture from a woman’s perspective that is, frankly, not all hearts, flowers and yellow brick roads.  On the contrary, the play is often unnerving and a little foreboding,” said Morden.  One of the most important playwrights of today, Caryl Churchill, has provided a brilliant script that celebrates women throughout history and brings to life a time when things seemed to be finally changing and reminds us of the distance still left to be traveled.

Ticket prices range from $17 to $28.  Discounts available for seniors, military, UA employee/alumni and groups of 10 or more.  Tickets can be purchased at tickets.arizona.edu or by calling the College of Fine Arts Box Office at (520) 621-1162 or in person at 1025 N. Tucson, AZ – October 22, 2018

Tucson, AZ – Arizona Repertory Theatre presents The Cripple of Inishmaan, by Oscar nominated writer and director Martin McDonagh, November 4 – December 2, 2018 in the Tornabene Theatre located at 1025 N. Olive Road (UA campus located near the SE corner of Park Avenue and Speedway Boulevard).

The Cripple of Inishmaan, directed by UA Assistant Professor Hank Stratton, is the story of “Cripple Billy,” an orphan in search of escape from the oppression of his daily life.  Set off the west coast of Ireland, on the remote Island of Inishmaan, the play begins as word arrives that a Hollywood film is to be shot on a neighboring island.  The one person who wants to be in the film more than anybody is young “Cripple Billy.”  Bringing his signature wry wit and biting social irony, playwright Martin McDonagh has crafted a painfully funny coming of age story that employs a series of whiplash reversals and false expectations.  From the writer of In Bruges and the recently Oscar nominated film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, the poignant comic masterpiece is equal parts dark comedy and Irish fable.

Tucson, AZ – September 7, 2018

TUCSON, AZLike Heaven is a new comedy by award-winning playwright and University of Arizona Professor Elaine Romero.  The play is filled with heart and humor and centers around four women struggling to discover who they truly are as individuals.  Director Brent Gibbs explains it best, “Everyone in this play is struggling to find their authentic voice rather than the ones they grew up being told they should use.”

Like Heaven represents an important project for the Arizona Repertory Theatre.  It is the first time since we opened the Tornabene Theatre almost two decades ago, with two original scripts, that we will have the opportunity to produce a new work in conjunction with the playwright,” notes Gibbs.  He goes on to say, “The process of working with a writer of Elaine Romero’s status has been an incredible opportunity for our students.”  During the rehearsal process, students have had the unique opportunity to work through the script with both the director and the playwright.  This type of artistic collaboration generates an exciting learning environment for students that results in fully developed characters and a beautiful piece of theatre.

Romero says of her play, “If you know my body of work, you might see Like Heaven as my anomaly play.”  But the play is close to her heart and she is proud to say that, “I fell in love.  I fell in love with each of these women and their plights.”  It is the plight of these wonderful women from Independence, Kansas that draws the audience into the play and leads them through an emotional and amusing journey to self-acceptance proving, once and for all, that there is no place like home.

TUCSON, AZ – Arizona Repertory Theatre (ART) is proud to announce the 2018-2019 season, designed to train, educate, and inspire University of Arizona students while entertaining dedicated audience members.  Each season, Arizona Repertory Theatre presents a variety of productions filled with intriguing dramas, delightful humor, and stories that seek to explore what it means to be human.  The 2018-2019 season continues this tradition with another extraordinary line up.

The season begins with the Arizona premiere of the humorous and heartwarming play, Like Heaven, written by UA Professor Elaine Romero.  The season continues with, Sister Act, based on the 1993 hit movie starring Whoopi Goldberg.  This uplifting musical is the story of Deloris Van Cartier, who breathes hilarious life into a convent and discovers a new sisterhood.  The third production of the season brings the work of Martin McDonagh to the stage in The Cripple of Inishmaan.  Known for the recently Oscar nominated film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, McDonagh presents a poignant comic masterpiece that is equal parts dark comedy and Irish fable.

Arizona Repertory Theatre kicks off 2019 with a celebration of women throughout history and reminds us of the distance still left to be traveled in Top Girls by Caryl Churchill.  Considered one of the most important playwrights of today, Churchill presents a brilliantly written script and captures the exhilaration of an era.  This story of great women is followed by the story of a great, yet wicked man, Richard III. In this historical tale, Shakespeare’s most notorious villain conspires and kills his way to the crown.  The season comes to a close in dynamic fashion with the eight-time Tony Award-winning musical, Spring Awakening.  This landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock-n-roll.

See Tomorrow’s Stars Today use their extraordinary talent to create an extraordinary season!

TUCSON, AZ – The Pajama Game is a Tony Award–winning musical that tells the story of the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, where conditions are anything but tranquil.  Sparks fly between the new superintendent, Sid Sorokin, and the leader of the union grievance committee, Babe Williams.  Their rocky relationship comes to a head when the workers strike for a 7 ½ cent pay increase, causing a conflict between labor and management, as well as a battle of the sexes. Jealousy, intrigue, knife-throwing and romance combine to impress and entertain audiences of all ages.

The Pajama Game has a romantic and joyful look and feel, but it’s really filled with heartache,” explains director Danny Gurwin.  “Not to say it’s sad, by any means.  It’s the pining for love, happiness, equality, and fair wages that gives the show such a beautiful timelessness and urgency.  And the music is some the best we have from the end of the Golden Age.  I hope audiences can enjoy the show and hum along, but still watch a young polka-dotted America fight for all of the things we still strive to find today.”

See Tomorrow’s Stars Today bring a classic musical full of fun and entertainment to the stage at Arizona Repertory Theatre!

Tucson, AZ – February 27, 2018

TUCSON, AZThe Merchant of Venice takes us on a journey into the best and worst of human nature. Portia remains one of Shakespeare’s strongest heroines and Shylock represents a crowning achievement in dramatic literature. Containing some of the most beautiful language ever written, The Merchant of Venice offers us a chance to spend time in the presence of a genius who continues to hold, as it were, a mirror where we can view ourselves.

Director Brent Gibbs observes, “The Merchant of Venice is a study in contrasts.  Hatred vies with love, mercy duels with cruelty, and the good in this world struggles against the evil that people carry within their hearts.  But this play is a study in contrast in other ways too.  Hilarious comedy gives way to searing drama as romantic passages collide with bitter truths, and through it all, Shakespeare steers the way with his stunning language and poignant observations of both the beautiful possibilities and the ugly shortfalls of human nature.”

Gibbs is proud to be directing his 19th Shakespeare production at Arizona Repertory Theatre.  In this latest creation, he guides our talented students through one of the Bard’s most complicated and powerful creations to give audiences a fascinating night at the theatre.

Tucson, AZ – Chekhov’s classic portrait of three sisters – Olga, Masha, and Irina – tells the story of love and loss.  MFA Generative Dramaturgy students, Fly Steffens and Anna Jennings, team up to create this fresh adaptation for the Studio Series.

Fly Steffen’s new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters titled, Insignificance is sickening and love means nothing at all; all it is is the strength to keep going on no matter what happens, explores the radical possibility of choice.  Characters driven by the strength of family, power of love and the ever-present hope for a better life are set in a world that is falling apart around them.  They face their individual addictions, anxieties, depression, fracturing relationships, and inability to change both symbolically and literally.  It is through love, hope and our personal choices that we are fated to exist in our realities.

“Elements of Chekhov’s Three Sisters remain visible in Insignificance is sickening and love means nothing at all; all it is is the strength to keep going on no matter what happens,” explained Dramaturg Anna Jennings.  “Steffens’ voice strikes a remarkable harmony with Chekhov’s, illustrating the human capacity for love and destruction through haunting images and poetic language.”

This new production continues the tradition of the Studio Series of pushing the boundaries of creativity, imagination and unpredictability.  Director John Muszynski is tasked with bringing this creative endeavor to the stage and excited to be a part of the process.  “I am always thrilled to be able to work on a brand new piece. There is so much value for student actors, designers and technicians to experience the challenges of new theatre with the playwright in the room. It is art in the making where we as artists share in its creation and eventual performance. This excitement of new work is transferred to our audiences in a shared experience.”  (This production contains mature subject matter and is not meant for children.)
